Fall with favorites!

Fall is my absolute favorite time of year.

Fiery foliage and jumping into leaf piles… crisp mornings and warm spices… comfort food and oversized sweaters. I’m technically December-baby but fall in New England is my jam.  There’s nothing else quite like it.

Oh and apple picking. Can’t forget apple picking.

One apple-picking-perk? Apple crisp. There’s nothing quite like sweet and spicy warm apples topped with an super crispy, crumbly crust, right? Last weekend, I got together with a couple of my favorite people (…and can’t forget my fave pup, Pebbles!) to tackle crisp-making.

We worked with a super simple recipe from A Family Feast that Amanda found on Pinterest – and doubled up the recipe to up all of the (20+) apples that we had.

Pebbles was super helpful with peeling…

We had fun peeling, chopping, mixing and crumbling — and followed the recipe almost to the tee. We added more oats than it called for – and I’m glad we did. It was definitely a sweet recipe, but not TOO sweet…but it could have gone there reallllly fast. I think if I use this recipe again, I’d use less brown sugar and add more oats.

I mean…c’mon you can’t really go wrong with a buttery, sweet crust? Really buttery…like Paula-Deen-would-approve buttery.

After 40 minutes of hanging out in the oven, it came out golden brown, bubbly and crunchy….

Not too shabby for a Sunday night??

….and breakfast the next morning. Whoops.

Cupcakes & Football?

A natural combo right? Well…okay, not usually.

Superbowl Sunday is usually filled with wings, beer, chips, dips, and pizza galore. All of which are glorious things…this weekend, my friend, Amanda and I used the opportunity to get together and stuff our faces with crazy good stuff…like cupcakes, champagne and apple cider. Oh, and we had chips and dip, too!!

I got to Sweet on Sunday afternoon fully prepared to purchase some red velvet cupcakes and be on my way…I thought to myself – surely it won’t be busy – I mean, who is out buying cupcakes on Superbowl Sunday?! I found out…a lot. Mostly tweens…and they were all in the shop being rather obnoxious. I felt bad for the people working; it’s honestly, usually such a chill, quiet little shop and there were just 12 year olds everywhere.

Oh…and they took the last of the red velvet. A crime! Seriously though…they were wiped out – and it was 4pm! They are open until 9 on Sundays!

Unphased by the lack of red velvet (okay, slight shaken…), I chose 3 lil’ cupcakes to share and made my way over for some pre-game catching up and chatting.

Oh, and sparkling Rosé is definitely one of my favorite beverages in the whole-wide-world. I love its sweetness.

Plus…it’s purrrdy!

Chips, hummus, guac and sparkling goodness were enjoyed during the first half – along with lots of conversation, laughter at the adorable, spastic gymnastics of her kitty, and disappointment in the overall “ad/brand” factor of the ‘bowl.

Cupcakes accompanied the half-time show…which honestly, wasn’t a fan. Maybe if the sound had been right…but from the beginning when Fergie was pretty much just straight up screaming…meh. She looked good though! Her bod is ridiculous – even under bedazzled football pads! …and I’m not gonna lie when they started singing “Where is the Love?”…I was secretly hoping that JTimberlake would descend from the ceiling like a little ethereal, falsetto crooning angel. …a girl can hope.

So yes – cupcakes were divided, shared and devoured. Organic Karat…mostly purchased for the fact that it had at least one aspect red velvet…cream.cheese.frosting. Frosting was good – but I wasn’t overwhelmed by the cake. It was good, but not the best I’d ever stuffed in my face.

Cookies and Cream…yes. The cake was great, but the frosting steals the show. My fave one.

Angel Food – something was drizzled on top (something delicious!). I don’t know what it was, but this was delicious. I love angel food cake, and I honestly would never really think to do it in cupcake form. Nom.

Overall, a fab evening. Now. Back to reality…

  • Do you watch the Superbowl? Do you watch for the game, the ads, the half-time show, the celeb spotting?? and what’s on your gameday menu?

Hola my beauties! How are you??

I’m well — I’m finally settled back into my apartment. Having today off was truly much, much needed. I had a small feeling of anxiety that I hadn’t felt in a long time on my way back into the city. It’s not that I don’t love it here — but I truly am over school. I love learning…don’t get me wrong, but in many respects I don’t enjoy being treated like a child when I am anything but one.

Ahhh. Oh well … as the song says…life goes on.

My weekend was filled with a lot of delicious food — of many different kinds. Please keep in mind as you read this post that I DID, in fact, eat more than just chocolate and baked goods this weekend. 😀

Cupcakes are just way more fun to photograph than cabbage. 😉

My weekend was filled with:

Stephen’s Dark Chocolate Hot Cocoa (you may recall how much of this I drank over Christmas break…delish!)

PB toast — an ebony and ivory of sorts. 50% Mighty Mapes, 50% Dark Chocolate Dreams…. 100% Amazing.

A Valentine’s Day gift to mi madre. A chocolate covered strawberry cupcake (vanilla bean cake with strawberry jam inside, covered with chocolate ganache and garnished with a strawberry) and a white chocolate cupcake (dark chocolate cake with white chocolate cream inside, vanilla bean frosting and garnished with white chocolate curls). We cut ’em in half and shared. 🙂 DELISH. Sweet has yet to let me down. 🙂

Other than that I got some grocery shoppin’ done! I stocked up on some PB&C ($1.50-$2 cheaper in NH than in Boston!!). I finally found a Kabocha…that actually has a kabocha sticker on it, aaand oh, more espresso ‘cuz well…you know how I roll.

I’m off to enjoy the last bits of my day off, aaaand tune in to the prime time slot of the Olympics — though I’ll admit, I already know one of the outcomes because our local news was too excited to keep it a secret til tonight. haha 🙂

  • Did you guys have the day off today, too??
  • What do you like to do with days off??

Thank you! & cupcakes!

Heyyy lovelies!!!

I just want to first thank you guys for all the nice comments, in regard to the passing of my pup. Unfortunately she suffered a stroke last week (unknown to us), and it wasn’t until this weekend that she started showing signs of struggling. We made the tough decision to let her go, and as much as I would have loved to have her around for much longer – it would have been so selfish to keep her here just so we wouldn’t feel sad. I’m sure she she’s romping and playing in puppy heaven somewhere. 🙂

Last night, I got out and went to the Bruin’s game at the Garden with my brother and a few friends. They lost (which they’ve become VERY good at…) — however, the game went into sudden death so it was a pretty exciting game. It was a great night out, and just what the doctor ordered.

This morning – I slept in…I had exhausted myself out of sadness I think..those first few hours were really tough…but I awoke feeling much better, and set out to making myself a latte. I even got out the whisk and made foam! haha Hardcore, right here.

Lunch was a few meatless balls topped with a little bit of sriracha…yum! I also had a few spoonfuls of Cinnamon Raisin Swirl and a couple of cheese sticks.

My day consisted of lazing around and doing homework — so it was fairly productive but stress free. 🙂

I didn’t feel like cooking for dinner — so I ran out to TJ’s and picked up a turkey, spinach, and swiss wrap. It’s really good (I’m currently noshing on it). It was ridiculously busy at TJ’s…and it was filled with people who don’t know the “route”…like they made everyone’s lives difficult by shopping in the wrong direction. C’est la vie. I got my wrap, some frozen veggies and peeeeeaced.

On my walk home, I decided that I needed to treat myself. I walked myself right into Sweet and picked up a Macaroon cupcake. I have yet to eat the beautiful little treat… but I have absolutely no doubt that it will be BOMMB. This is how they describe the cupcake: “vanilla bean Sweet cake with coconut baked in for a crisp macaroon cookie-like top, dipped in our own Callebaut chocolate ganache” — eee — so excited!

I’ve got all the work I need to do for tomorrow done — so I’m snuggling up and watching The Grammys Red Carpet on E! and then later obvs watching the awards show. Lady Gaga has already won two!! and she’s opening the show…so excited! haha

I hope you all had fabbbb weekends! 🙂

Cupcakes! Sah-weeeet!

Hey everyone!! Sorry for the late update — it’s been a hectic day!

I was up and at ’em early (okay, I was up…but was I fully functional? no. 🙂 ), and then heard the buzzing of my phone, and the familiar ringtone I have for my school e-mail address….first thought — Class canceled??? Alas…no. haha He was going to be late (he totally should have canceled though, in my opinion 😉 haha). Either way, I was able to get ready and get out the door without rushing myself. I got my coffee (sorry no pics…although I’m sure by now, you are well aware of what my skinny hazelnut latte looks like), and ran into a friend who was in my class, and we caught up and whatnot while postponing going to class. It was lovely. We did eventually go to class though. haha

I got home from class, and I had to go get a few errands in really quickly. I picked up a present that really is for my mom, but it is meant to share obviously. I just wanted her to know just how much I appreciate what she has done over the last few months for me…driving me back to school after work, and picking me up and all that.

So THIS is what I got her:

It’s this lovely little cupcake shop around the corner from me called Sweet. It’s definitely not cheap and definitely not an everyday thing…but as a treat, oh yes. Perfect. I picked up a half dozen, and boy do they look delicious.

The flavors I picked were pumpkin with cream cheese frosting and a candied roasted pumpkin seed on top, and, my personal fave, red velvet with cream cheese frosting. You could pick as many flavors as you wanted…but I figured the simpler the better. These pictures really don’t do the cupcakes justice…I’ll have to get a better picture tomorrow when they are no longer in the box.

I’m excited for my red velvet!! haha Yes…I claimed cupcakes in my own gift to my mother — I knew she would not object. 🙂

Anyway, so it was around 1ish? at that point, and I needed to clean my apartment and eat some actual food…instead of just staring at beautiful cupcakes. 🙂

I made myself a yogurt mess with the usual players.

I honestly can’t remember if I ate anything else before dinner — I sure as heck didn’t photograph it…it was a hectic afternoon! In my evening class we watched part of the movie The Fog of War. I really liked it — it was interesting to hear almost “behind-the-scenes” convos of Presidents past…and just how…messed up war and government truly are. I can honestly say that I would never want to have to make the choices that not just US officials, but politicians everywhere have to make…sometimes there just is no right answer. I’m anxious to see the rest of it.

After class, I had plans to go to dinner with my mom. We went to Cafe Jaffa and it was delicious. I got the same thing that I did last time…the falafel and hummus plate. YUM! I also had some mango sangria. — just what I needed! 🙂

THIS time…I took a picture of my meal!!

I also got some -unpictured- JP Licks after that…. non-fat peanut butter soft serve frozen yogurt with some oreos on top!!!! Yumm…it was cold out but I was in heaven. Their yogurt is so good!!! I wish I had a picture…but it was too good to resist until I found my camera. haha

I’m officially on Thanksgiving Break! and ahh it feels good! I have stuff to do, but just the fact that I don’t have to drag my booty to class for the rest of the week is a weeeelcome change!! 🙂 Anyone else get a decent break this week??

What do you guys like to do when you get those rare moments of relaxation??

Hope everyone has a fabulous week!!!

Peace, Love and Munchies.
